What is a 24 hour Holter ECG recording?
A 24 hour Electrocardiogram (ECG) records the electrical activity of the heart over a twenty four hour period. The test is also known as an ambulatory 24 hour ECG monitor and a Holter recorder. The monitor records the heart rhythm continuously so all beats, both normal and abnormal, can be viewed by the analyst.

Why do I need an ECG Test?
A 24 hour ECG will record the activity of your heart throughout the recording period. It will show how your heart responds to your normal, daily activities and record what is happening when you experience your symptoms such as dizziness and palpitations.

What happens during the test?
Your appointment will be approximately 15 minutes. A trained physiologist will fit the monitor and explain the process answering any questions you may have. Stickers are placed on your chest. A ’Patient Cable’ connects the stickers to a recorder which is roughly the size of a mobile phone. It can be worn on your belt, placed in a pocket or worn in a lanyard around your neck. You should try and continue to do all your normal activities during the day to allow a full analysis of your hearts activity.

What should I wear?
We recommend loose clothing to the upper part of the body and please do not apply any cream or lotions to your chest prior to attending the appointment.

Is there anything I shouldn’t do during the test?
Please do not bath or shower whilst wearing the device.

Will the test hurt?
No. The 24 hour ECG is painless

What can the test show?
Abnormal beats and irregular heart rhythms.

What happens after the test?
After the recording period you will be asked to come back to have the device removed. The data is analysed by a qualified cardiac technician who will view the recording and write a report which is sent to your Doctor.
