24 Hour Blood Pressure Monitor
If the in clinic blood pressure is 140/90mmHg or higher, offer ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) to confirm the diagnosis of hypertension.
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is now recommended by NICE for use in the diagnosis of hypertension:
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring at Express Diagnostics permits the non-invasive measurement of blood pressure over a 24 hour period. It is indicated to exclude ‘white coat’ hypertension. (A recent study in a UK primary care setting showed that nearly 33% of treated hypertensive patients exhibit the white coat effect.) It has a further role in assessing apparent drug resistant hypertension, symptomatic hypo or hypertension and patients with borderline or labile hypertension.
The technique of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is specialised, requiring validated and appropriate quality control measures to be used – all of which are guaranteed with Express Diagnostics ABPM service. Our interpretation of the ABP profile includes mean daytime, mean night-time (sleep) and mean 24 hour measurements, as well as consideration of information from patient diaries and times of drug treatment. The aims and expected outcomes of our ABPM service are:
- To avoid unnecessarily labelling patients as hypertensive
- To identify patients at increased cardiovascular risk due to hypertension more accurately
- To initiate treatment for hypertension before the onset of target organ damage
